The Preparation

Preparing for the Driving Test is no different to preparing for any examination. You need to be positive and double check all the requirements that will be expected of you. Paperwork, Car and so on... But the real edge that you can easily give yourself comes from commitment.

In other words you will need to accept that you will have to carry out some detailed fine tuning with a Driving School and not just hope for the best!

Getting a real feel for the area where your test will take place is an absolute must and you should practise at different times of day and different days of the week.

Doing some Detective work  will pay dividends also …finding out what Road works are going on and anything in the way of new road layouts or Traffic Lights that look as though they are coming on stream or particularly temporary routes. Just because a whole new road layout is operational the day of your Test and no one knows what is going on, will not be of any concern to your Examiner. He or She will expect you to deal adequately and safely with all situations that you find yourself in strange or otherwise.

In Terms of actual specific techniques or manoeuvres these should all be practised until you are totally confident. Your Driving Instructor will assist here and help you to achieve the necessary level of skill for each manoeuvre.

Here is a list of manoeuvres that should be practised constantly in the lead up to the Driving Test.:-

#   Turnabout

#   Reverse around the corner.

#   Every type of Roundabout…std/non-std/ mini

#   Positioning

#   Traffic light sequences

#   Stopping at a stop sign

#   Pedestrian Crossings

#   Lane changing

#   Hazard procedures.

Any one of these above mentioned manoeuvres badly carried out can lead to a failure on the Test and frequently do.

Learner Drivers often think that because they have been driving for a year or two without incident that they must be competent and will naturally pass the Test on the Day. Not so…without sufficient detailed practise and preparation under the watchful eye of your Driving Instructor it will be difficult to achieve the result that everyone wants.
