The Reverse around the Corner!

While this manoeuvre looks and sounds simpler than the Turnabout it is actually more difficult to accomplish .The same principles hold true—and that is once you understand the key elements then it is purely down to lots of practise on different corners, to gain the skill needed to satisfy an Examiner. On occasion the Driving Examiner will make this manoeuvre a little less fraught by a new protocol which they utilise.

Instead of having to be a Detective, as in the past and working out what is coming next; when asked to pull in and stop; you will be told before the manoeuvre what is about to happen.

  1. You will be asked to pull in and stop; then move off and stop past the junction which you can see to your left and then to reverse around that corner.
  2. This gives you a really good chance to observe what is going on in the side road  you are about to reverse into as you pass by and before you stop on your left for the second time. You will get an idea if the road is completely clear of parked vehicles; if there are any children or dogs in the vicinity or if there are any vehicles on the move or reversing out of their driveways! To be forewarned is to be forearmed!

The key points here are:-

  1. Park 15-18 inches from the kerb and not too far past the junction.
  2. If you are too close to the kerb it will be difficult to navigate the corner without making several corrections at which point you will probably go too wide.
  3. Real time vision is required ALL ROUND and mirrors are of secondary importance.
