How to get Your New Learner Permit & Full Driving License in Ireland!
The Learner Permit has replaced the old Provisional License and forms part of the developing graduated system for Drivers obtaining a Full Driving License and beyond.
The Newly announced Essential Driver Training EDT will come into force on the
EDT ---> 4th April 2011 <---- EDT
This is the first of a series of changes to the regulations governing the journey to the Driving Test ,the Full Driving License and the Two subsequent years!
As mentioned previously, your first step is to pass the Driver Theory Test.
Requirements for obtaining your Learner Permit are as follows:-
Theory Test Pass Certificate.
Learner Permit Application Form
Application Fee
Eye Test Certificate (stamped by an Optician)
Two Colour Passport Photographs.
Birth Certificate (original) or Passport. Identification
Any Special Medical Conditions will need to be signed off by a Medical Practitioner.
The next stage to reaching your Full Driving License will be to book and take Driving Lessons with a Fully Qualified and Registered RSA Instructor.
Since the Introduction of The Registration of Driving Instructors known as ADI’s it has been illegal to give Driving Lessons for Reward or Payment. unless a person has completed and passed the rigorous Three Stage Examination process!
Since it will be a condition of your acceptance to sit a Driving Test, to present a signed certificate from a Registered Instructor(ADI) you must now familiarise yourself fully with the new Regulations before you commence Lessons.
The mandatory 12 hours Tuition of the EDT will be structured and spread out ideally over the six month period from the first day of your Learner Permit to the 6th month date.
You will be not permitted to sit your Driving Test before 6 months have elapsed on your Learner Permit and without presenting the signed certificate of EDT completion.
This marks a huge change in the previous regulations and there will be successive changes over the next 24 months which are laid out on the RSA web site.

These include very strict conditions imposed on Novice Drivers for the two years after they have passed the Driving Test and have obtained a Full Driving License. We’ll discuss these in another article on the Site.
The 12 hours Mandatory Tuition before the Driving Test will only be approximately one third of the Lessons and Practice you will need to undergo in order to pass the Irish Driving Test.
So you all need to be prepared for a lot of hard work and focus if you are to be successful!
