Road Tax
Road Tax
There is not a whole lot one can say about Road Tax except that it is a necessary evil when owning and running a car. With ever increasing levels of computer records it is not possible to escape the clutches of the Law, if you were so inclined. An improving Data base and administration of car registrations means that if a car is not taxed you will be contacted by post and then in Person. If a car is genuinely off the Road for whatever reason and you wish to put it back on the road then you will have to pay a visit to your Local Garda Station and fill in the requisite form and have this witnessed. If your car Tax lapses you will receive a final reminder six weeks after the expiry of the previous Tax Disc which you must fill in and return. Car Tax can be renewed on –line which is a very useful service indeed or in person at your Local Motor Tax Office or by post although this latter method is not such a good idea as mail can and does go astray. If you are unlucky enough to be waiting for a Tax Disc and are spotted by a Traffic Warden then you will receive a ticket which will then have to be challenged in person at the Parking Fines Office.
The rate of Tax applicable to any car is based on the engine size or Cubic Capacity/or Horse Power and varies a lot. It is worth familiarising yourself with the relative Tax Bands for each engine size as even a small increase in Engine size can mean you will be paying much more per annum for the privilege of having your car on the road. All of these costs on top of the purchase price of your car add up to a substantial amount annually and need to be budgeted for. You can pay Quarterly, Bi-Annually or Annually. There is not a huge saving paying one year up front but the time saved may be worthwhile to you.
